Behind the Firewall: A Conversation with Egleni Romero
With women making up just 35% of the technology workforce, it’s more important than ever to support women in male-dominated fields who are breaking barriers and creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders¹. In our new series, Behind the Firewall: Conversations with Women in Technology, sponsored by Authentix, we highlight the trailblazers leading the way in technology, while exploring how organizations like NextUp are driving meaningful change toward a more inclusive future.
Egleni Romero’s journey from Venezuela to becoming a Program Manager at Authentix, Inc. exemplifies resilience and determination. Holding degrees in Chemical Engineering from Universidad Central de Venezuela and Human Resource Management from Colegio Universitario de Caracas, Egleni and her family left Venezuela in 2016 seeking a better future and more opportunities, first moving to Mexico and then to the United States. Despite the challenges of adapting to new cultures, Egleni’s perseverance was unwavering. She learned English at a community college in Irving, TX, and began her career at Authentix in 2019, quickly advancing through three promotions in the Analytical Lab before transitioning in 2023 to her current role in Program Management, the same year she became a U.S. citizen. In July 2024, she earned her Master’s degree in Project Management. Today, Egleni manages programs across Latin America, embodying the spirit of hard work and dedication.

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in technology?
From a young age, I’ve been drawn to problem-solving and the idea of making a positive impact, which led me to pursue a career in technology. I’m passionate about finding innovative solutions to everyday challenges, and I’m constantly inspired by technology’s ability to transform industries and drive progress. The fast-paced and challenging nature of the tech industry keeps me motivated to grow, develop new skills, and contribute to shaping its future.
What challenges have you faced as a woman working in tech, and how have you navigated them?
As a woman in technology, balancing my personal aspirations with my professional life has been my most persistent challenge. Setting clear boundaries and maintaining a healthy balance has been crucial. Fortunately, the flexible working arrangements and supportive policies at Authentix, such as remote and hybrid options and a wide range of flexible work hours, have played a key role in helping me achieve this balance.
How have you seen the tech industry evolve in terms of diversity and inclusion since you started your career?
The tech industry has made a quantum leap in diversity and inclusion since starting my career. Companies now recognize that diverse teams drive better business results. Investments in training programs and organizations like NextUp, which continuously address unconscious bias, promoting work-life balance, and diversifying management teams are becoming the norm. Notably, there are more women and individuals from diverse backgrounds in leadership roles, fostering a culture of inclusion.
What role do mentorship and professional networks like NextUp play in helping women navigate male-dominated industries?
My involvement in NextUp has facilitated the development of professional connections and helped me gain valuable insights into my own leadership capabilities. These networks are a game-changer for women’s development—they offer personalized coaching, boost confidence, and equip members with cutting-edge skills. Additionally, they open doors to networking with professionals at all levels, creating a vibrant community of support and growth.
What steps can companies take to create more opportunities for women in leadership positions within the tech industry?
A great approach for companies is to implement fair opportunity programs alongside mentorship initiatives. These programs allow women to exchange experiences with leaders, gaining valuable support, guidance, and the confidence needed to advance in their careers.
At Authentix, we’ve incorporated NextUp for women, which has been an incredible initiative. I’ve found it empowering to connect with other women in the industry and learn from their journeys. NextUp has not only provided me with valuable insights but also inspired me to push my own boundaries and strive for leadership roles. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received and optimistic about the future, knowing I am part of a company that truly values diversity and inclusion.
What advice would you give to young women considering a career in tech, especially those who may be hesitant due to existing gender disparities?
My advice is not to let the fear of not meeting requirements or the gender gap hold you back from pursuing a career in technology. Many companies are now embracing inclusion and diversity because they’ve seen the benefits. Remember, you can learn many skills on the job. The most important thing is to work hard, believe in yourself, ask for help when you need it, and remain open to new ideas. Stay positive and go after what you want—no matter what. You’ll get there!
What has been the best career advice you have received?
The best career advice I’ve received came from my father: “Keep learningcontinuously, embrace challenges, and practice resilience.” This wisdom has become more than just career advice; it’s a guiding philosophy. In today’s fast-paced world, staying updated with the latest developments in your field and continuously acquiring new skills is essential. Embracing challenges and stepping out of your comfort zone fosters incredible growth. And when mistakes inevitably occur, resilience enables you to bounce back stronger and wiser.
Can you name another woman in the tech industry who inspires you and explain why?
Mary Lee Woods inspires me deeply because of her pioneering contributions to computer science and her role in advancing technology. She was instrumental in developing programs for early computers like the Manchester University Mark 1. Beyond her technical achievements, she fought for gender equality in the workplace, ensuring women received equal pay and opportunities. Her ability to overcome significant barriers in a male-dominated field inspires my own confidence to pursue a similar path.
Mary Lee Woods’ legacy of technical brilliance and unwavering commitment to social justice continues to motivate me every day. Her story reminds us that with resilience and dedication, we can overcome any barrier and drive meaningful change in the world.
